Here you'll find answers to the questions I get asked the most, from both customers and budding knifemakers.
Q: What steel do you use?
A: I use mostly AISI D2 and O1 tool steel. Due to being a semi-stainless, combined with the "toothy" nature of D2 it makes for an excellent hunting knife. O1 is a fine grained high carbon steel that is easy to sharpen and so works extremely well for bushcraft knives, wood carving knives and is generally accepted as a great all rounder.
Q: What grinder do you use?
A: I use a 2" x 72" custom built grinding machine. The numbers refer to the width and length of the abrasive belts.
Q: Do you test your knives?
A: Absolutely! Every knife is tested first for Rockwell Hardness after both the heat treat and temper process, and every new design is put through a series of rigorous tests to ensure it will perform above and beyond it's expected capabilities.
Q: What handle materials do you use?
A: I use both natural materials and modern composites, depending on the customers choice. Often I'll use a combination of both, for example exotic wood with coloured g10 liners
Q: Do you make full custom knives?
A: Yes, but rarely. I get asked often for full customs but they're so time-consuming I prefer to have only one on the books at any given time.
Sometimes however, a design will interest me and I'll agree take the job on, but they're not cheap.
